The 2016 UEFA European Championship, generally referred to as Euro 2016 or merely UEFA Euro 2016, will be the 15th edition of the UEFA European Championship, the quadrennial international men's soccer championship of Europe arranged by UEFA. Spain are two time defending champions.
For the very first time, 24 teams will contest the European Championship final tournament, having been expanded from the 16-team format. Under this new format, the finalists will fight a group stage consisting of six groups of four teams, followed by a knockout stage including three rounds and the final.
France was picked as the host country on 28 after a bid procedure where they beat Turkey and Italy to host the 2016 finals. The matches will be played in ten stadia in ten cities: Bordeaux, Lens, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Paris, Saint Denis, Saint-Étienne, and Toulouse. It will likely be the third time that France sponsor the tournament, after the inaugural tournament in the 1984 finals and 1960. The French team have won the European Championship twice: in 2000 and 1984.
The winning team earns the right hosted by Russia.
